A Warmer Home and a Greener Vision: Maja’s Story in Belmont

When Maja and her partner bought their 1970s brick home in Belmont, they were excited to renovate and transform it into a cosy, energy-efficient retreat. Working from home, Maja needed a comfortable space through winter without constantly relying on heating.

She heard about the Electric Homes Program through Geelong Sustainability’s newsletter and signed up straight away.

“The timing was perfect. We were just starting our renovations and looking to make sustainable upgrades. The program made it really easy to take that first step,” Maja said.

The couple chose to install insulation in the walls and under the floor to improve the home’s thermal performance. The result? A home that stays warm with minimal heating, even on the coldest days!

“We used to run the heating all day in winter. Now, we just turn it on briefly in the morning. I didn’t expect to appreciate the feeling of warmth and comfort so much—it’s made a huge difference,” she said.

Their future plans include replacing their remaining gas appliances as they reach the end of their life, and developing a thriving permaculture garden.

“It’s still a work in progress, but we’re getting there. The Electric Homes Program helped us get started on what can feel like a pretty overwhelming journey.”
